The EW Skinny
The Evolving Word is designed for three purposes: miscellaneous rambling (a token gesture, as there are a million sites designed for this), my creative publishing, and thoughts and news on words -- origins, differences, anomalies, etc.

Enjoy it, or not; comment, or not; but do not ignore it. Or ignore it. Whatever.

What Most Of Us Are Thinking
Posted by joel on Saturday, October 16 @ 12:23 AM PST (1545 reads)
Politics BYOO. Bring Your Own Opinion. You may or may not like Jon Stewart. You may or may not like The Daily Show. You may or may not know about either. If you haven't seen The Daily Show, you are missing out on an opportunity to laugh at the most outrageous aspects of modern politics and news delivery. An unapologetic liberal, Jon Stewart nevertheless seems to be interested in pointing out the "absurdity" of partisan politics. His interviews may be softballs, but as he points out, the show that leads into his is about puppets making crank calls.

And now he has fought back at the media that he mocks on a daily basis. His interview on "Crossfire" earlier today is quickly becoming classic. I have posted it here for the enjoyment of all.

Religion and politics
Posted by joel on Wednesday, September 29 @ 09:23 AM PST (3097 reads)
Politics I respect reasoned opinion. I may not always agree with it, but if you make an argument that is well thought out I will respect your right to those opinions and I will fight for you to have those opinions. This is, of course, the beauty of our freedom. Joe Schmoe can believe that a beer bottle is his savior and unless he hurts someone else, we pretty much let him do what he wants. We may laugh at him and call him names, but that is also our right.

There are times, though, that I just don't understand the logic behind an argument. Some opinions seem to masquerade as factual, reasonable dissertations on important topics, while really just an outlet for frustration and anger. When people I respect and love offer up these types of arguments, I have a hard time not offering an opposing viewpoint.

When Jon posted this article on his website, I had to reply. Rather than take up his space with my rebuttal, I figured that I would post it below for your enjoyment. Please feel free to disagree, throw things at me and call me names. That's the stuff that good times are made of.

Politics SelectSmart has a new selector available to help you determine which 2004 presidential candidate you agree with most. It seems to be a fairly balanced survey, with results that you are bound to disagree with to some extent.

A Little Movie About a Big Bomb
Posted by joel on Saturday, May 17 @ 02:55 PM PST (1874 reads)
Politics A few stories ago, I ranted a little about small scale nuclear weapons. The movie in this story is something I created in response to the issues raised in that article. Be sure to stick around until the end. The quote that closes the movie is very moving and powerful.

We're Going to Party Like it's 1958...Again
Posted by joel on Thursday, May 15 @ 11:25 PM PST (2021 reads)
Politics In an apparent attempt to alienate the world community, prove that hypocrisy is casual and bring back memories of those fun atomic bomb drills in school, the Bush administration is moving forward with a plan to resume nuclear weapons testing. Effectively abandoning the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, signed in 1968, the Senate Armed Services Committee has approved the lifting of a 10-year old ban on researching small-scale nuclear weapons for battlefield use. In the process, they also approved funding for a large-scale bunker buster nuclear bomb, potentially 1 Megaton in size.

In honor of this exercise in insanity, I provide you the following video if you read on.

Politics Will the hackers that defaced the Al-Jazeera website be subject to the same investigation, prosecution and penalty as others who have done the same to other websites?

Would the response be the same if they defaced the CNN or MSNBC websites?

We'll see....

Putting out oil fires
Posted by Joel on Wednesday, March 26 @ 02:57 PM PST (1300 reads)
Politics Good business? Or not? Why did Boots & Coots, a subsidiary of Halliburton (formerly run by VP Cheney), get the uncontested contract to put out the Iraqi oil fires? What other companies can do this? How about Safety Boss, which has been around for 47 years? Or Cudd Well Control? Oh, I get it, we would rather have a company that is on the verge of bankruptcy because of 200,000 asbestos lawsuits filed against it.

More information here if you are interested.

Conspiracy or not, shouldn't the government be a little bit more considerate of image?

A simple question
Posted by Joel on Sunday, March 16 @ 06:45 PM PST (1198 reads)
Politics How will you lead your life, now that you know about this? Do you believe that mankind's innate goodness will ultimately triumph over the evils we can create? Do you believe that we are the pawns of a greater evil, intent on our destruction? Is it part of humanity, the need to develop ever-greater weapons of horror? Is this already written for us, and we have no recourse against its finale? Or does none of this matter, because we do not have power over such over-arching complexities of life?

"Do Not Call" me Shirley!
Posted by Joel on Tuesday, March 11 @ 05:47 PM PST (784 reads)
Politics Say what you want about the President and the international maelstrom we are living through, but he did find time today to sign the National Do-Not-Call Registry into law. While not a complete victory (the FCC still has to sign on for it to be universally effective), this is a major step towards regaining some control over our own telephones.

California has been proactive in this, but with the investment and the authority that the Federal government can bring to the table, we will all be better off.

Now how often can you say that about government regulation?

Politicalnessality
Posted by Joel on Sunday, March 02 @ 07:19 AM PST (771 reads)
Politics What are you, politically speaking? It's easy to say left or right, conservative or liberatarian, but are these all somehow related? Perhaps, but maybe not as much as you think. This site takes you through an interesting 10 minute questionnaire about your political beliefs. Rather than plotting the result on a line from left to right, it draws a graph, and uses two dimensions to describe your basic politcal alignment. It separates left from right, authoritarian from liberatarian, and does so in a nifty little graphic!

Try it out. Ultimately, you will probably find out that you are exactly what you thought you were.
