The EW Skinny
The Evolving Word is designed for three purposes: miscellaneous rambling (a token gesture, as there are a million sites designed for this), my creative publishing, and thoughts and news on words -- origins, differences, anomalies, etc.

Enjoy it, or not; comment, or not; but do not ignore it. Or ignore it. Whatever.

All Sorts of Crazy
Posted by joel on Friday, September 10 @ 04:01 PM PST (1741 reads)
General Maybe I deserve it. I haven't posted here in an unacceptably long time, and someone was bound to notice. Many of you are faithful readers, coming back again and again, desperately hoping for some small nugget of wisdom from me. And here I am, high and mighty, thinking that I can withhold these gems without repercussion.

Really, it kind of serves me right. I ignore this place and someone goes off and hacks into it.

All Queued Up and Nowhere To Go
Posted by joel on Tuesday, March 16 @ 10:18 PM PST (1780 reads)
General Yes...another extended break from this website. But for good reason, I swear! More on that later...

One of the problems that I have had is that I end up with a ton of stuff I want to share. I read the stories, save the sites, think the thoughts, and eventually totally miss an opportunity to appear on the forefront of blogging news. Instead I usually read about my interesting finds in other locations, many other locations, and talk myself out of throwing something up here.

Well, no longer...At least, no longer with some of the old stuff. I really can't make any promises about the new stuff that I come across. That being said, read more to get a quick compilation of interesting things...

Am I Evil Or Not?
Posted by joel on Wednesday, August 20 @ 09:42 PM PST (1708 reads)
General Evil is a highly misunderstood word. It is an anagram of "live", "vile", "veil" and "ivel". It is used with pride -- "I can be so evil sometimes" -- as an accusation -- "You are sooooo evil" -- as a descriptor -- "That is evil" -- and as an innuendo -- "Come over here and do me evil style". The term has many connotations and is used primarily by people who don't truly understand the potential of the word.

Finally, though, someone has figured out the mathematics behind evil. It is with this person's process that I can now annouce that my website, The Evolving Word, is 32% evil, which turns out to be the same amount of evil as the first chapter of Genesis. Read more to learn more...

The Weblog Review
Posted by joel on Monday, July 28 @ 10:08 PM PST (1832 reads)
General I started this thing a few months ago. Writing on a blog isn't original, or even important, but it has its charms. It can be cathartic. It can be a funnel for interest. It can be a place to drop my pants and wiggle it around a little bit. All in all, while most people could care less that I write, I care that I write here, on this website.

Do I need validation? No, of course not. Do I like it? Sure. Check out this review at The Weblog Review and see why I have a smile on my face.

Do You Have An AMD Dimensional Warp Generator Laying Around?
Posted by joel on Thursday, June 19 @ 12:32 PM PST (1692 reads)
General Seriously, I just got a request for one of these. Like spam from the future, this message requests the warp generator among other things. As far as I can tell, there is no particular joke here. Nothing says "HA!", or asks for your credit card number. At worst, they can just verify that you have a working address.

Maybe this truly is an email from the future. The timestamp doesn't indicate this (it says "Thu, 19 Jun 2003 10:42:21 -0500"), but does that really matter anyway? This could be a desperate plea from a stranded "future man" who needs these items to escape the temporal prison in which he resides. I almost feel compelled to reply to it. If this man dies in some horrific continuum tear, I might be responsible. This is a terrible connundrum to find myself in. Read more to see the text of the email.

Cliché Becomes Reality
Posted by joel on Wednesday, May 14 @ 10:58 AM PST (1566 reads)
General When I was 17, just a week or two out of high school, I had my ear pierced. I did it because I could, and because it made me feel like I was breaking out of a shell that I had been in during high school. I still wear an earring today, mostly on weekends, and I enjoy it.

In 1995, during my last year at UC Irvine, I had a second piercing done in the same ear. I can understand the mentality of a person with multiple tattoos. There exists a point at which you want to take the next step, however small, to adding to the process you started. Unfortunately, the second piercing became infected and I had to let it close.

I have never really considered a tattoo. It's just not my thing. I have nothing against people who decorate their body in this manner (although I find the extremely tattooed person generally off-putting), but I have never had the urge to do this.

These people, though, have no problem changing parts of their body into something beyond description. Read the article, and if you are interested, read more to find out about how you can have your tongue split.

An Easy Way to Lose Your Appetite
Posted by joel on Friday, April 04 @ 04:52 PM PST (1642 reads)
General Clearly, time changes everything. We learn from the mistakes of the past, vow never to repeat them, and move on. As the famous cliche says, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." It is in this spirit that I ask you to visit this site. Be sure to click through as many of these authentic Weight Watchers cards as possible. You will be frightened. Very frightened.

EDIT: The site has been removed. I will post a new link if the site re-appears.

EDIT AGAIN: This site is available once more. Click, view, vomit and laugh.

A New Survey
Posted by Joel on Monday, March 31 @ 07:08 PM PST (1277 reads)
General A new survey has been posted. You can find it here.

Actually, it is the same survey as before, but because it is no longer on this front page, I thought I would put a quick link in here to it. If you haven't voted, try it now!

Good ole Joe
Posted by Joel on Saturday, March 01 @ 12:46 PM PST (1261 reads)
General (posted originally by sandyh)

Now this is sad. I gave up watching TV back in 1984. My mother was living at my house and very sick, needed my almost constant care. All the sitcoms I enjoyed at one time, I gave up one by one, as every time I sat down to watch one, either one of my kids or my mother needed something.

Here it is 19 years later and I am addicted once again to TV. But go figure!!! Joe Millionnaire, Bachlorette, American Idol, I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. Where has my sanity gone. Do I have a reasonable healthy cell left in my brain. Joe Millionaire had ended and no Evan and Zora have not found true love. The Bachlorette ended, Ryan and Trista did find true love, I will now need to find something in these time slots to replace these shows. What will it be?!? Maybe I'll join in to help match up two complete strangers who will wed each other on the air. One show I've got lined up on my calendar hopefully will prove to replace the void in my life. I can't think of the name of it, but it will be finding America's top country singer. Ya'all should tune it, it starts next Saturday night.

In the meantime, I'll catch some episodes of Shipmates or something.

Anyway,

duck and cover.
