The Evolving Word is designed for three purposes: miscellaneous rambling (a token gesture, as there are a million sites designed for this), my creative publishing, and thoughts and news on words -- origins, differences, anomalies, etc.
Enjoy it, or not; comment, or not; but do not ignore it. Or ignore it. Whatever.

I Own a Mac

I almost categorized this under "Politics", since that is how heated the whole Mac vs. PC debate can get. If you think that you have ever been caught in the middle of a deathmatch, afraid for your own life, try joining me as I discuss this issue with teachers, in almost any school district.
You'd think that the prospect of a resolution to this issue rivals "peace", "ending starvation", "curing AIDS" as worldwide focus topics go.

Because Some People Are Just Scum

This is one for all of you techies out there, and anyone who is interested in the ways that porn profilerates on the Internet.
So I'm checking out my HTTP referrals for this website. These are indications of where visitors came from to visit this site. For example, if you were at The Nickel Arcade and clicked a link to visit this site, I would see an HTTP referral from "www.nickelarcade.net". If you click on the link above to go to the site, Nickel Arcade will now have an HTTP referral from me. Pretty simple, and sometimes pretty cool.
In the hands of pornographers, though, it can be a devious and deceptive tool.

Electronic Crimes Task Force

Sometimes, I just know the right people. Some of the experiences that I have had lately are the result of very generous and thoughtful friends, and I truly appreciate that. Take my recent foray into downtown Los Angeles as an example. Despite my intense interest in all things cryptographic, I never anticipated a guided tour of the heart of the government's forensic efforts to investigate computer and technology crime.
This is an account of my recent tour of the Secret Service's Electronic Crimes Task Force.

Hey, I've Been Scammed! (Again!)

It happened again. Like the previous email from (a fake) PayPal, this new one from (a fake) Ebay informs me that my account information needs to be updated. Unlike the PayPal email, though, the only attempt to make it look official is a small graphic at the top. Yet, as always, I am sure that thousands of people will be convinced to click the link and input their personal information.
The text of the email and the one and only thing I cared about are listed below.

Hey, I've Been Scammed!

Or at least, someone tried to scam me. Paypal.com scams have been around for a while. These and other scams are often effective because they seem official, but a few key items indicate something much more devious.
I received an email at 11:50am this morning informing me that my PayPal account was subject to termination due to inactivity. To avoid this fate, I was instructed to fill out a form with personal information. The email had a legitimate look, seemed reasonable (at first), and would be very easy to fill out and send back.
But I would have been very sorry had I done this. Read more to see exactly what the email said.

Question: Which one of the following technologies exists today?
1) The transporter from Star Trek
2) The hyperdrive from Star Wars
3) The human energy suckers from The Matrix
Answer: None, yet.
But one of these technologies is closer than you might think to becoming reality.

606 Takes...605 People Gone Insane

The video below is really quite amazing. You may have already seen it on television. If you haven't, odds are that you will. Either way, you will be amazed. Not just by what you see with your eyes, but that fact that it took 606 takes to get it right.
And yes, those tires are really rolling uphill.

The Downside of Mortality

The only regret that I have about my eventual death is that I will not be around to see some of the things we only dream of right now. I thought that invisibility would be one of those things, but apparently a scientist at the University of Tokyo has embarked on a journey to create an invisible coat. It is very crude, and completely impractical, but the picture is still very cool to look at. And the whole thing is pretty cool to dream about.

I finally moved all of the weblogs at www.evolvingword.com/blog over to PHP-Nuke. If you are now consistently visiting this front page, you should no longer need to visit the blog.
I am separately working on migrating the forum at www.evolvingword.com/board over to something more compatible with this site. Right now, you have to register separately to post here and on the board. Not the best mechanism...
If you have any great, innovative, ingenious ideas, let me know!
