The EW Skinny
The Evolving Word is designed for three purposes: miscellaneous rambling (a token gesture, as there are a million sites designed for this), my creative publishing, and thoughts and news on words -- origins, differences, anomalies, etc.

Enjoy it, or not; comment, or not; but do not ignore it. Or ignore it. Whatever.

Save Bernd!

Humor I fell out of my chair, laughing hysterically, when I saw this website: http://www.krohm.mynetcologne.de/bernd.htm.

How amazing is it that this guy has already raised almost 42,000 euros?

I just hope that this isn't what happened to Oolong, the pancake-balancing rabbit. More here.

I Love the Past. It Cracks Me Up.
Posted by joel on Friday, September 17 @ 08:56 AM PST (2129 reads)
Humor People are great. Just in general -- people are the most inventive and hilarious humans around. If it weren't for people, and their incessant need to live and breathe, this world would be a lot less funny. I am brave enough to say, even if it could be an unpopular opinion, that most of the world's top-rate humor comes from people.

This week's installation of "People -- The Things They Do and The Many Ways We Laugh at Them" includes the tremendous story of "Saddle Men". Don't know what Saddle Men are? Fortunately, you have come to the right place. Read on, intrepid humor-desirer, and be entertained by the sheer brilliance of people.

I Can Relate
Posted by joel on Thursday, June 17 @ 05:07 PM PST (1700 reads)
Humor So I am checking out aintitcool.com when I come across an article about the new contestants of "Last Comic Standing". Having watched most of the first season of this reality show, I took a peak at the information contained within. Much to my surprise, Gary Gulman, a 6'6" Jewish man, had this to say:

"They always say the same thing: 'How tall is the milkman?' At this point I just along with them, 'Yeah, my mom was with the milkman. She only dates guys with professions that no longer exist. That's her thing, yeah. She dated the milkman for a while, before that she was involved with a cobbler. They chimney sweep, chim-chim-cheroo. The town crier, hear ye hear ye. She dated the blacksmith for a fortnight, just a fortnight. She even dated the muffin man; do you know the muffin man?"

If you only knew how hard I laughed when I read that.

I Am So Popular
Posted by joel on Tuesday, March 16 @ 10:29 PM PST (1771 reads)
Humor As the last post acknowledges, I have been away for a while. After posting a few minutes ago, I decided to drop in on my HTTP referrers. These are other websites that people came from to visit my site. I wrote about this in this story, where I described how devious marketers are using these to boost their Google popularity. I hadn't, until recently, noticed some of the absolutely hilarious search terms used to get to this website. Read more to check out some of my favorite.

Cog Missing

Humor Remember that Cog Ad? This was the commercial that Honda put together that melded creativity, ingenuity and back-breaking redundancy in an immeasurably re-watchable advertisement?

Well, it's back. Sort of. In a twisted sort of way. And kind of funny sort of way. Click "Read More" to see the latest incarnation of this fan favorite.

You Can Say Anything and be Better Off Dead While Looking Pretty in Pink
Posted by joel on Monday, June 30 @ 10:04 PM PST (2120 reads)
Humor Movie parodies are the quintessential escape from absolutely everything that matters. A step removed from something already a step removed from reality, parodies allow us to mock both the films we enjoy and the people who enjoy them. In the end, it is about us laughing at ourselves, and our fondness for the quick pace of pop culture disposal.

We used to induce catatonia in ourselves imagining our passion for the 70s. The 70s now, though, are part of our collective psyche. A communal "Village People"-retrospective, anything 70s is now considered kitsch, and ultimately cool. For a short period of time, the decade of the 80s was the bastard child of the 20th century. Now, though, through the accelerated wonder of cultural forgiveness, we can enjoy the 80s, free of guilt-ridden memories. You, too, can make a passing reference to "Flock of Seagulls" and be "hip".

It is with these thoughts that I give to you, my friendly reader, the following movie. How many 80s references can you spot?

Brunching Shuttlecocks: 1997-2003
Posted by joel on Thursday, May 22 @ 09:41 PM PST (1876 reads)
Humor Take a look. No, really, take a look. If you look hard enough (and wade through several pages of the second link), you will find some of the earliest references to me on the Internet. Yes, I was Guido. And yes, that was my fifteen minutes of fame.

Unfortunately, the website that made this possible, The Brunching Shuttlecocks, is shutting down for good. The indelible combination of humor, wit, and humor that The Brunching Shuttlecocks represented will be forever lost to the Internet archives. Not completely out of reach, though, as they will leave up their impressive history indefinately.

You Are Being Watched...And Taped...And Edited...And Laughed At
Posted by joel on Saturday, May 17 @ 02:46 PM PST (1602 reads)
Humor In late April, a video suddenly began showing up on weblogs and forums all over the Internet. It was a silly video, essentially a kid pretending to wield a lightsaber and jumping about with reckless abandon. No one knew who this kid was, but the video was funny as hell and it was passed around, linked to, and talked about at an incredible rate.

Inevitably, the video was remixed, special effects were added, and a legend was born.

Horrific and Hilarious Cat Fun
Posted by joel on Thursday, April 17 @ 01:02 PM PST (3518 reads)
Humor This video really should not be viewed by anyone. It is inhumane, brutal, sad and offensive. But after watching it one time, and picking myself up off of the floor, I became mesmerized. I can't stop watching this and, if you dare to watch, you will not be able to stop either. Oh, and if you hate cats, you will love this.

MOAB
Posted by Joel on Tuesday, March 11 @ 05:36 PM PST (787 reads)
Humor The "Massive Ordinance Air Burst" Bomb was tested today in Florida. It is a 21,000 lb. behemoth designed to destroy, well, everything in the immediate vicinity of its target. Some have already begun calling it the "Mother Of All Bombs". I challenge you to come up with your own names based on the acronym.

Some suggestions:

Maybe you Otta Avoid this Bomb
Maniacal Overlords Admire Bombs
Many Others Are in disBelief

I'll try to come up with better ones later.
